Amy Pikler's Musical Journey
Are you and your child enrolled in a group class and have always struggled with bad habits on the violin and viola?
Are you or your child ready to quit playing violin and viola due to being in pain all the time?
Do you or your child feel unmotivated to practice your instrument?
If so, they are in good company because I had these same problems in my own past.
I started playing violin at the age of five, and my parents pushed me to practice several hours every day to the exclusion of outside activities.
As a result I seriously considered quitting music.
Real instrument learning does not have to be like the way I was taught as a child. I recommend practicing in short blocks of time to make it easier to retain what is learned as well as ensure that practicing is enjoyable without becoming too tired. I believe that even if you or your child are enrolled in a group class such as a school orchestra, there is still an opportunity to learn correctly.
Also, I recommend not focusing on everything at once but instead focusing on only a few things at a time to avoid overwhelm and frustration.
In my past, I also felt that I was constantly compared to others due to performing in competitions and auditions “against” other players. In order to avoid this attitude and mentality, I strive to create a judgment free zone and safe learning environment for those interested in continuing their musical journey.
I knew that these changes needed to be implemented in my own teaching so that I would not set musicians up for failure in their emotional and physical health and well-being. I also believe in increasing performance confidence and reducing performance anxiety!
My teaching methods have created significant results! Three of my students auditioned and were selected to be part of the Texas region orchestra in October 2022, one of my other students attending a public high school placed second division at the Texas state competition with a silver medal in June 2023, and another student received a score of two in the High School Solo and Ensemble division.
Through my teaching methods, students are now achieving their personalized goals, and several students have continued studying with me for several years in a row.
You may be asking yourself how it is possible to achieve your goals and want to continue learning violin and viola in my latest online program versus in a group class or one on one setting.
I assure you that this is completely possible. Several of my current students had many technical problems before studying with me. Some of them were aware that they had issues, but they had no idea how to fix them.
Other teachers never pointed out their issues nor how to practice them on their own time. Group instruction did not give them the attention that they needed nor inspiration to perform as an individual. As a result, they continued to struggle with the same problems.
When I started working with them, I explained to them in detail exactly which issue(s) they needed to work on as well as each small step which would help them solve it. After working through their technical problems little by little, they felt much more confident in their performing abilities and had more motivation to practice on their own time.
After working with me, it became the first time in their life that they were excited to perform either in front of people for performances or in audition settings.
Placing in audition settings has created an opportunity for them to develop their social skills alongside correct playing techniques in the orchestra. Also, receiving compliments from others on their performances has helped increase their self esteem and self worth.
Their successes have been so great that they keep deciding to perform in public and perform the same auditions with the goal of obtaining higher scores year after year. Non-musical parents are able to hear the difference in sound quality in their child’s playing before and after working with me.
However, if my current one-on-one students had enrolled in my online program prior to starting one-on-one lessons with me, they would have been much ahead in the game.
If they had learned the technical skills before attending their private lessons, we could have started working on music they are preparing instead of wasting valuable time discussing the same problems every single week.
They would have had access to my teaching methodology on an ongoing basis instead of only an hour a week or an hour every two weeks, and they would have had an opportunity to ask me questions online everyday instead of needing to wait until their next lesson.
You don’t have to settle for inferior results, and it’s not too late to change this!
